Whilst unfortunately we were unable to tackle the Great Walk on Fraser with the limited time we had on the Island, we did manage to pack in some great sights and thought we would put together a short blog to help you also make the most of 3 days on Fraser!
Fun facts! Fraser Island is the largest sand island in the world. It has formed from river sand from New Zealand over 720,000 years ago. The traditional name for the Island is K'Gari which means princess of the great maker.
Day 1
Wanggoolba Creek & Pile Valley
On our first day we had lunch at the day use area at Wanggoolba Creek. We did the short walk along the "silent" creek and through Pile Valley.
This walk is one out of three places in the world where King Ferns grow naturally.
Lake McKenzie
After completing the creek walk we drove to the famous Lake McKenzie (Blue Lake) where we spent the rest of the afternoon.
Day 2
Maheno Shipwreck
We started the morning by exploring the Maheno Shipwreck.
Lake Wabby Circuit
After checking out the wreck, we drove to Lake Wabby (Green Lake). There are two circuits that can be completed. We did the shorter circuit which is 4.8km return. The circuit takes you to the Hammerstone Sandblow, from which you can then walk down to Lake Wabby for a swim.
This place is seriously cool and a must do walk while on the island.
Eli Creek
After Wabby we headed to Eli where we spent about an hour chilling and creek floating.
Lake Birrabeen & Lake Boomanjin
After Lunch we checked out Lake Birrabeen and Boomanjin. To be honest, these lakes whilst beautiful, were no match for Wabby and McKenzie. If you didn't have enough time to see all of Fraser, we would recommend skipping these stops.
After checking out the lakes we headed back to camp for the night.
Day 3
We were up early on Day 3, wanting to capture a sunrise on our last day. What a way to start your day!
Waddy Point
On our third day we headed far far north to Waddy Point. The drive itself was incredible, and we came across our first dingo!
Waddy point was one of our highlights of the trip, if you can, 100% check out this spot.
Champagne Pools
After Waddy point we checked out Champagne Pools which is another famous spot on the island.
We loved out short time over on Fraser Island. We could not recommend the guys at Sunrover Tours enough. The three day camping tour was the perfect opportunity for us to explore Fraser and we will most certainly be back.
If you are more interested in the hiking side of the Island and the Great Walk, Sunrover also offer packages for the Great Walk which include pick-ups and drop-offs each day and they supply provisions so you don't have to carry a big pack!
