Atherton Tableland Waterfall Circuit and Small Adventures

We are both super in love with the Atherton Tablelands. We spend a lot of time in this area, the hiking is incredible. The Tablelands has so much more to offer than just hiking. We acknowledge that not everyone wants to go walk up a mountain for hours on their weekend so we thought we would put together a list of some of the other incredible spots to check out when you are next in the area. These are all small stops along the way, all our big adventures are contained in our other blogs.

We will continue to update this list as we continue to explore ourselves. We hope that you will find it helpful. We would also love to hear from you about any recommendations you have for us to visit!

Millaa Millaa Falls

As the name would suggest, this waterfall is located in Millaa Millaa. It is less than 100 metres from the carpark to the falls and easily accessible. This waterfall is one of three located along Theresa Creek Road. The other two waterfalls are Zilllie and Ellinjja. We recommend visiting all three.

Ellinjaa Falls

These stunning falls are also located on Theresa Creed Road in Millaa Millaa. The falls are also easy to access with a sealed short path no longer than 150 metres to the base.

Zillie Falls

This waterfall is conveniently located in-between Millaa Millaa Falls and Ellinjaa Falls along Theresa Creek Road. The path to the top of the falls is easy to access. The pathway to the bottom of the falls is more of a goat track and a little more tricky to navigate, but not long.

Malanda Falls

Malanda Falls, cleverly named as it is located in Malanda is one of the smaller waterfalls on the tableland, but still pretty to stop at. It is easily accessed via a short sealed pathway. This is perhaps the most easy to access waterfall you will come across.

Mount Hypipamee Crater and Dinner Falls

The crater and falls are located along the Kennedy Highway. If you are in the Herberton, Malanda or Millaa Millaa area it is a short detour by car. The walk is circuit of less than 3 km return. The walk to the crater viewing platform is only around 700 metres from the carpark and is sealed and mostly flat, so easy to access.

The walk to the falls is a dirt track off the main track to the crate. It is easy to follow, however, does require you to gain and lose some elevation, but nothing strenuous. The falls are a popular swimming spot.

Big Millstream Falls

This magnificent waterfall is UNESCO world heritage-listed. Fun fact, it is also the widest single-drop waterfall in Australia! It is located on the Kennedy Highway between Ravenshoe and Innot Hot Springs. The falls viewing platform is easy to access from the carpark along a short and sealed pathway.

Innot hot Springs

This could just be one of the best camping destinations in Far North, especially in the winter. The Innot Hot Springs is a natural wonder. The springs consist of pools of varying temperatures (be careful some are actually boiling). When we visited we went into the creed bed with a shovel and dug out the perfect hot tub.

While visiting we recommend you stat overnight at the Innot Hot Spring Health and Leisure Park. The Park has three private pools each kept at a different temperature.

Chillagoe-Mungana Caves National Park

If exploring limestone caves interests you, there is a full blog post article on our adventures to the Chillagoe-Mungana Caves. We highly recommend!

Emerald Creek Falls

Located just outside of the town of Mareeba, Emerald Creek Falls is a sight to behold. If you love natural infinity pools, put this one on your list as you can actually walk to the top of the falls for a quick dip. The beauty of these falls is that they are located in the Dinden West Forest Reserve meaning it is pet friendly!

Davie Creek Falls

Another natural infinity pool located between Mareeba and Cairns. We just love Davie Creek Falls. It is the perfect spot for a refreshing dip after hiking Lamb's Head or Turtle Rock, or after mountain biking.

Lake Barrine Walk and Teahouse

The Lake Barrine Teahouse is famous for it's Devonshire Tea, and for good reason! Why not stop in and treat yourself whilst taking in the beautiful surrounds of the lake. This lake on a sunny day is a brilliant green. You can also walk around the lake along a sealed 6km path. If you don't feel like walking the entire lake, we at least recommend that you walk the 80 metres from the carpark to visit the two large Kauri pines.

Lake Barrine is located near Tinaroo Dam. Read our Articles on the Dinden National Park for hikes available in close proximity.
